YouTube Improves Content ID Dispute Policy

YouTube Creator Blog:

We’re developing a new solution that will allow videos to earn revenue while a Content ID claim is being disputed. Here’s how it will work: when both a creator and someone making a claim choose to monetize a video, we will continue to run ads on that video and hold the resulting revenue separately. Once the Content ID claim or dispute is resolved, we’ll pay out that revenue to the appropriate party.

A nice enhancement of the Content ID system in favour of content creators. Rather than monetisation just not happening for videos whilst in dispute, the ads stay but any revenue is kept in quarantine until the dispute is resolved on a particular video. When the ruling on video rights is decided, the money is distributed to the appropriate party. Although the payment is delayed, it’s way better than before when false claims would simply render channels unprofitable.

Of course, this means nothing if the resolution process is unfair in its judgement and the content creator forfeits the revenue when its video was legitimate and valid. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen. I haven’t heard from many people who have had bad claims ruled against them so I think it’s rare for that to happen.
